What is the process of obtaining a Golden Visa?
Once you opt to invest in Fjord Capital, our Fund Manager, Fundbox, will guide you through all the necessary steps:
- Legal Steps: finding a legal representative, applying for a Portuguese tax number, and opening a Portuguese bank account.
- Complete Investment: complete KYC package and make the transfer of the investment amount.
- Submit Golden Visa Application: prepare all documentation and complete application online.
- Trip to Portugal: schedule an appointment at the immigration office (SEF) in Portugal to have the biometrics of you and your family taken.
- Obtain Golden Visa: receive confirmation and get your Golden Visa card.
- Renewal: After 2 years you need to renew your Golden Visa Residence card.
- Citizenship: After 5 years of residency, you can apply for a Portuguese citizenship.

Who Is Eligible for a Golden Visa in Portugal?
Any non-EU/EEA/Swiss national can apply for the Portugal Golden Visa, as long as they are above 18 years old and hold a clean criminal record in their home country and in Portugal.
Can my family take advantage of my Golden Visa?
The main Golden Visa applicant can extend his benefits to his immediate family. Immediate family is considered:
- Spouse
- Children under the age of 18
- Children under the age of 26, dependent on the main applicant, and only if they are a full-time student and not married
Are loans allowed for the golden visa investment in Portugal?
What about taxes?
Portugal offers favourable tax regime through the non-habitual residency (NHR) program. This offers exemptions from income tax for the first 10 years of residence.
Do I need to speak Portuguese?
There is no language requirement to obtain residency.
Speaking the local language creates a more immersive experience, however, the Portuguese are used to hosting foreigners, and English is widely spoken.
Should you wish to proceed with applying for citizenship after 5 years, a language test is required to show your knowledge is at A2 level of the European language framework. A2 corresponds to basic conversational command of the Portuguese language and there are many resources and classes available to help you prepare both in person and online.
Children under the age of 10 are exempt from doing the language test.
How long does it take to receive the residence permit?
After submission of all necessary documents, the process is expected to take up to 90 days. To have the cards in hand in your home country it is expected to take less than 150 days.
